Boys over Flowers is a story revolving around four rich,
good-looking guys namely Gu Jun Pyo, Yoon Ji Hoo, So Yi Jung
and Song Woo Bin who are well known in Korea. They are feared
by those studying in the elite school which they are in control.
They issue a "red card" to a student whom they don't
like and the other students would make that person's life
miserable. It is in this school where they met Geum Jan di,
a poor girl who only got the chance to study at the same school
because she ended up saving one of the students who got beaten
up because he was given a "red card". Unlike other
students, she doesn't care about the so-called f4 although
she finds Ji Hoo, one of the f4 members, rather interesting.
Their paths would soon cross when Jan di saved one of her
friends from f4's leader, Gu Jun Pyo. Because of this, she
got her own red card but that didn't stop her from fighting
back. Jun Pyo found the idea amusing, thus, started liking
her without even realizing it. On the other hand, Jan di and
Ji Hoo started to become acquainted and her feeling for him
grew deeper. Later on she found out that Ji Hoo already had
someone in his heart and advised him to follow his heart and
go after the girl.
Meanwhile, Jun Pyo started pursuing Jan di which wasn't easy
since Jan di didn't really liked him in the first place. One
night, Jun Pyo invited her to go Namsan Cable car where they
ended up spending the night together. News about the event
soon spread and everyone regarded them as a couple in which
Jun Pyo happily agreed. It was when Ji Hoo came back and everyone
noticed the change in his personality.
F4 decided to go to an island to celebrate together with
Jan di and her friend, Ga eul. It was here when Jan di found
out the reason behind Ji Hoo's change and to Jun Pyo's horror,
he saw Jan di and Ji Hoo kissed. Because of this, Jun Pyo
decided to expel Ji Hoo and Jan di from the school as well
as remove Ji Hoo from the group. Jun Pyo's sister decided
to step in to create a tournament that would decide if the
two should indeed be expelled. In the end, no one was expelled
and Ji Hoo decided to let go of Jan di for Jun Pyo's sake.
Jan di and Jun Pyo started dating and it wasn't
easy for them. There was even a time when Jan Di was captured
by someone who wanted revenge on Jun Pyo. Jun Pyo allowed
himself to get beaten up in order to save Jan Di. When he
was about to be hit by a chair, Jan Di went in his way and
got hit instead. Ji Hoo, Yi Jung and Woo Bin came to their
rescue.
After the incident, they decided to go to a ski resort, Jun
Pyo gave Jan di a necklace. After this, Jun Pyo had to go
to Macau to study and learn to take over their business. He
promised Jan di that he will come back for her. Months later,
Jun Pyo hasn't returned and no one heard any news about him
which is why Jan di, together with Ji Hoo, Yi Jung and Woo
bin decided to go to Macau to see him. They were surprised
when they saw the Jun Pyo had changed so much and that he
doesn't care about Jan di anymore. Also, they found out later
on, that he was already engaged to Ha Jae Kyung, who came
from a wealthy family.
On the other hand, Jan Di started to pursue the field of
medicine after she found out that she can no longer swim because
of her shoulder injury. She also decided to move on without
Jun Pyo but she was having a hard time since Jae Kyung was
trying to be friends with her without knowing that she was
Jun Pyo's first love. Jun Pyo, on the other hand, decided
to go on with the engagement while he slowly realizes that
he still loved Jan di. It came to a point when Jae Kyung and
Jun Pyo were already at the church for their wedding and Jae
Kyung finally let Jun Pyo go by saying that she doesn't have
feelings for him and she doesn't want to marry him which wasn't
really the case. She just wanted Jun Pyo and Jan di to be
happy. Jun Pyo and Jan di reunited and reaffirmed their feelings
for each other. This did not stop Jun Pyo's mom from making
plans that would destroy their relationship.
Meanwhile, Ga Eul already had feelings for Yi Jung even though
he knew very well that he was a playboy. It didn't stop her
from believing that inside, he is really a good person. She
later on found out about Yi Jung's first love and why he turned
out that way.
The plan of Jun Pyo's mom was then put into action and this
time, Jan di's friends were the target. Jan Di, then, had
no choice but to leave Jun Pyo for good. She decided to go
to the province where her parents where living. Ji Hoo found
where she was staying and went after her. Jun Pyo, on the
other hand, followed her as well after realizing that he can't
let her go. Jun Pyo was watching Ji Hoo when he saw a car
which was about to hit Jihoo. He saved Ji Hoo and ended up
getting hit instead. When he woke up, he forgot everything
about Jan di. Jan di with the help of the three, tried to
help Jun Pyo remember.
Meanwhile, someone tried to befriend Jun Pyo while they were
both at the hospital. They decided to have a party where they
announced that they were both going abroad to study. As a
last resort, Jan di approached Jun Pyo and asked him what
her name was. She threw the ring into the pool and allowed
herself to fall into the pool. Jun Pyo finally remembered
who she was and then dove in to save her. After the incident,
Jun Pyo decided to go abroad for 4 years in order to handle
the family business and that he will come back for Jan di
after that.
Four years later, Jun Pyo is already known as someone who
is successful in business, Ji Hoo and Jan di are both studying
to become doctors while Yi Jung came back to pursue Ga Eul.
Jun Pyo went to the beach where Jan di was, knelt down and
proposed to her. Before Jan di could answer, Ji Hoo, Yi Jung
and Won bin came. The five of them all looked into the horizon.
End.
The Korean series, Boys over Flowers was not the first series
that was based on the Japanese manga which is known as "boys
over flowers". Other countries have already adapted the
same story. It was first created in Taiwan as "Meteor
Garden", where they had two seasons. Then, Japan also
made their own and named it "Hana Yori Dango" which
also had 2 seasons. The Korean series only had one season
but they were able to include all the important details of
the story.
As for the characters that portrated the famous F4, they
were really able to find four good looking actors. For me,
if you compared their F4 to the other series that portrayed
the same story, they're F4 is far better compared to the other
two. As for the story itself, the series wasn't really dragging
since it's normal for a Korean series to always have a moment
for it's characters. But if you compare it to the Japanese
version, Hana Yori Dango had a faster pace.
There were scenes though that could have been edited like
the part where Jan di is swimming. It would be okay to see
it once or twice but to see it over and over again is too
much. I guess, they were trying to emphasize the idea that
whenever Jan di had something on her mind, she would go out
and decide to swim. There were also some discrepancies since
in the series, Jan di later on finds out that she can no longer
swim because of her shoulder injury but she still continues
to do strenuous works like cleaning the windows of a building.
Also, it is already a given that the fourth member of F4,
Woo Bin, didn't really have much of a story. This is true
in all the other versions except for the Meteor Garden version
where they created a story for him in the second season. Since
that is already a given, they still wanted the character "Woo
bin" to have it's own story so they inserted his story
in the middle of the series. They showed him feeling sorry
for himself because he became rich and powerful because his
family revolves around the Mafia. For me, that story line
was trying too hard and they inserted it out of nowhere. It's
like one can see, that they just added it for the sake of
giving him a story. They could have created a story for him
that had more meaning or that wasn't obvious that they just
added the scene just for the sake of giving him more screen
time.
For me, the points that I just mentioned should have been
taken into consideration when they made it. If you're a fan
of Meteor Garden and Hana Yori Dango, you better watch this
series since this is really for you. Even though you already
know the story, you will still find watching this version
enjoyable. The fans wanted the series to have a second season
but for me, they were able to end this series on a good note
and there's no need to have a second season. Before the series
even started, there were already so much hype revolving around
it, since it was already known, and for me, they were able
to live up to it.
Thanks to its soaring ratings, "Boys over Flowers"
original soundtrack albums are also selling like hotcakes.
Already 30 thousand pre-sale orders have been placed for the
album. The OST production company had originally planned to
sell only five thousand copies, but the drama's explosive
popularity has compelled the album maker to release many more
than the initial plan.
Unlike other drama OST albums, which generally gain viewers'
attention only after the shows are over, "Boys over Flowers"
OST is already hot among the show's viewers. Especially popular
are "Paradise" sung by Kim Jun, one of the cast,
"Stand by Me" by SHINee, "I'm Stupid"
by SS501, and "Lucky" by Ashily, but almost all
the songs in the album are listed on the nation's top music
charts.
