SYNOPSIS: Cha Young-goon
works in a factory and is brought to a mental hospital after
she plugs herself to an electric socket. In the hospital,
she meets Park Il-sun, another patient, who thinks he can
steal other people's souls and abilities.
Young-goon talks to fluorescent lamps and other inanimate
objects, gives up her meals to another obese patient who eats
her meals for her, licks batteries as her food, wears her
grandmother's dentures whenever she panics, and dreams of
killing all the doctors and nurses in the mental hospital.
Despite all these weird characteristics, Park Il-sun slowly
falls for her and he follows her around to observe. This is
when he realizes that Young-goon is slowly dying of starvation
and Il-sun races against time to save her life.
REVIEWS: This is Rain's
first feature film. When I first heard of this project, I
wondered why Rain would choose a storyline that is not so
popular. However, when I found out that this movie was nominated
in the South Korea Grand Bell Awards and won in the Berlin
International Film Festival, I decided to give it a try.
In the beginning, it was a bit weird for my taste. It would
seem that the storyline focused too much on the idiosyncrasies
of the different patients in the hospital. With scenes of
these patients rolling on the floor, shouting names, making
up stories, or simply creating havoc all over the place. But
then, watching Rain and Lim Su-jeong give such convincing
performances, I think Rain made the right choice. After all,
he did win as the Best New Actor in 2007 Baeksang Art Awards.
You forget that Rain and Su-jeong are high profile Korean
Wave stars and instead you find yourself sharing in Il-sun
and Young-goon's world.
This movie may not be fully appreciated by the mainstream
crowd but it makes an important point. That love and happiness
is for everyone whether you live in the real world or a make
believe one.
